Standout dry German Riesling with Anne Krebiehl MW – Thursday 12th March
For many wine lovers, dry German Riesling represents the ultimate in lightness of touch – the very definition of nuance and elegance. And the most nuanced of all such wines are the Grosse Gewächse.
So-called GG wines are the pinnacle of the German wine scene, heralding as they must from a Grosse Lage (‘Great Site’). Specific only to dry wines, the category was introduced in the early 2000s by an invitation-only group of top producers as a way of identifying and protecting the country’s finest vineyards.
Join renowned German wine expert Anne Krebiehl MW for an overview of the category via six dry Riesling GGs, all from the 2017 vintage. The wines have been selected to showcase a range of regions, exploring how soil types and local culture influence the winemaking style.
‘At almost a decade old, the wines should all have hit their stride by now and show how far GGs have come since their inception in the early 2000, when the idea of a dry Riesling from a single, classified site was still met with some scepticism,’ says Anne.
German-born but London-based, Anne Krebiehl MW is an editor for Vinous, covering Germany, Austria, Alsace, England and Grower Champagne. She also writes, lectures and judges for a string of other outlets, notably on German wine, and is the author of The Wines of Germany, part of Académie du Vin’s Classic Wine Library.
